AI is changing skincare…but is it actually inclusive?
I decided to find out for myself. I tested four popular AI skincare tools, not just to see how smart they were, but to see how well they saw me. As a dark-skinned woman with combination skin, I’ve had my fair share of skincare fails: harsh recommendations, zero nuance, or just being excluded altogether. This time, I wanted to try something new…and document the process like an experiment in softness.
Each app was tested over a few days, and I’ll be sharing personal notes, screenshots, and a very Oak Theory™ rating scale:
🌰 The Oak Review Scale
🌰 = Missed the mark entirely
🌰🌰 = Meh. Might work for someone else, but not for me
🌰🌰🌰 = Decent. Had potential but a few things threw it off
🌰🌰🌰🌰 = Pretty solid. Thoughtful, helpful, and mostly got me
🌰🌰🌰🌰🌰 = YES. Felt like it was actually made with me in mind
1. Revieve: AI That Gets Your Skin… Kinda
What It Claims: Personalized skin diagnostics using a selfie and brief quiz. Offers detailed analysis and product recommendations based on concerns like hydration, texture, pigmentation, and more.
My Experience: The interface is super clean and easy to use, which I appreciated. Uploading my photo felt intuitive, and the analysis came back quickly. It gave me a breakdown of everything from dark circles to oil levels… but the language felt clinical. Not inaccurate, but not human either.
Also worth noting: It didn’t explicitly ask about melanin-rich skin or note how deeper skin tones might present differently. That always feels like a miss.
Pros:
- Interface is beautiful and responsive
- Loved the personalized product suggestions
- Quick to use, good for people who want answers fast
Cons:
- No nuance around deeper skin tones
- Some product suggestions leaned more commercial than helpful
- Felt like a skin assessment, not a ritual
Best For: Anyone with time constraints who wants a surface-level scan and quick product recs.
My Rating: 🌰🌰🌰 (3 Acorns)
2. L’Oréal Skin Genius
Coming soon: I’ll update this after I’ve tested the app for a few days and lived with the results.
3. Scanoma
Coming soon: I’ll update this after giving it a full test on real skin texture and sun exposure days.
4. Aysa Care
Coming soon: Will update after exploring how it handles dark skin conditions and texture concerns.
